FAQs for Academic Tutoring

What subjects do RTC tutor?

We offer academic support in almost every K-12 subject, from elementary Reading and Math to AP Calculus and Physics, and everything in between. Here’s our full academic course offering – if you don’t see something listed, please ask! We also offer college and graduate subject support.

Where do you find your tutors?

All of RTC’s tutors are carefully selected for their intuitive, innate teaching talent, their empathy and ability to connect with students, and their exceptional content knowledge. Most of our tutors are in Pennsylvania, where our company is physically located; as a national company that serves our students virtually, we also have exceptional tutors across the country.

How do you make a tutor match?

Our student onboarding process is very thorough. After our preliminary phone call with a parent, we ask the family to fill out a detailed questionnaire about your student and their needs. From there, we’ll have an interview with your student to get to know them, their strengths, and their learning needs. We are rarely wrong in our tutor matches, but we are happy to hear from a family if they would like a different tutor match.

Do you offer virtual tutoring?

Absolutely! All tutoring is available virtually in a variety of formats like FaceTime, Zoom, and WhatsApp with online whiteboard support. We recognize that the dangers of emerging COVID variants have made in-person tutoring unrealistic for the near future. We understand that we need to prioritize both our tutors’ and our students’ safety, and so we have returned to tutoring entirely virtually at RTC.

We have always known that 1-to-1 tutoring is customized, connected, and personal. We had data to show that our virtual test prep programs were just as successful as our in-person test prep programs long before the pandemic started, and we have seen some of our highest score gains in virtual test prep since the pandemic began. We feel entirely confident and comfortable that virtual tutoring can provide our students with everything they need in their learning, because we have seen our tutors teach everything from early Reading to AP Calculus to Mindfulness virtually since the beginning of the pandemic. Please ask us if you have questions.

Can you work with students with special needs or learning differences?

At RTC, we pride ourselves on getting to know our students, and we work with students with all kinds of learning needs every day.  Since we work 1-2-1 with students, we don’t tend to think of any of these as “special” needs – every child has unique needs, and our tutors are equipped to meet them.

Do you have a minimum lesson length?

In academic tutoring, minimum lesson length is usually one hour, and billing is done in five-minute increments. Again, we customize this entirely based upon the student’s needs. One of the conveniences of virtual tutoring is that tutors and students can sign on to lessons instantly, which means that a student who needs help can reach out to an available tutor at any time.
